Soccer (Association Football!) runs through my veins. I was born and raised in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. Blackburn Rovers FC is my home town club and a successful member of the English Premier League. Blackburn Rovers were one of the founder members of the world’s first professional league in 1888.
Growing up where soccer began is an incredible experience. Here is an idea of how it is a part of your life. I was born on Thursday 2nd March 1967. I came home from the hospital on Friday 3rd March. On Saturday 4th March my dad was at home with his new born baby and his wife to take care of….big dilemma though, Blackburn Rovers were playing at home to Birmingham City…….Yes, you’ve guessed it, at 3.00pm that afternoon he was at Ewood Park cheering on his beloved Rovers, we have the programme to prove it.
So, obviously soccer has been a part of my life pretty much since I was born. I have played/coached/watched soccer every day since I was born. I have a passion for the game and a thirst for knowlege that is all consuming. I will share with you many stories of such as time goes by.
I came over to the USA in 1988 as an exchange student from Aberdeen University in Scotland to attend the University of Illinois. No intention of and no idea that it was possible to play soccer for the school. I came across the soccer club at Quad Day looking for players and that was it! I tried out with 68 other players and made the team. We had a great year, ranked the No1 club team in the nation and went ahead to prove the rankings correct by winning the National Collegiate Club Soccer Association Championship, defeating Minnesota Gophers via a penalty shoot out.
I returned to Scotland and just played intramurals in my senior year so that I could concentrate on my studies. I graduated in 1990 and entered the “real world” involving having to work for a living.
On my 27th Birthday I started an English Football Association Preliminary Coaching Course (The Prelim) and was taught how to coach by Roy Tunks who played over 750 games as a professional player in England. I worked alongside Roy for a couple of years as a volunteer in order to learn more from this great coach.
I completed three of the next levels of coaching courses call the “Prep Courses” which are designed to “Prepare” you for the “Full Badge” which at the time was as high as you could go in England. I worked alongside a number of former professional players including Mike Phelan who you can see sat next to Sir Alex Ferguson on Man Utd’s bench. I believe he is now the Manchester Utd first team coach.
Roy Tunks recommended me to Chris Sulley, a former professional player who was in charge of the youth coaching at Preston North End. I then went to work for the Preston North End Soccer School.
I was also allowed to attend first team training at Blackburn Rovers helping out their coaching staff. All I did really was fetch balls and observe. I learned from Terry Gennoe, Roy Tunks, Tony Parks, Derek Fazakerly (played over 650 times for Blackburn and was the assistant coach at Blackburn, Newcastle Utd, Manchester City and England)and Roy Hodgson the former Inter Milan, Swiss National Coach and now the coach at Fulham FC in the Premier League. I observed how the coaches worked and also how the players reponded and applied themselves. This was an incredible experience for me.
I then was invited back the USA to coach at the Squaw Valley Soccer Camp in Lake Tahoe, CA. I worked there for 4 Summers. Alongside this job I set up my own soccer business, the Soccer Center of Excellence (SCE) which involved coaching youth and adult players, running youth and adult indoor and outdoor soccer leagues and tournaments. This involved over 140 teams playing each week and over 300 kids each week in my clinincs. I sold this business in August 2006 and moved down to Southern California.
I am now the Head Soccer Coach at Whittier College which is an NCAA Division III School. I was hired as the 5th coach in 5 years. I inherited a neglected program and really only met the players a few days before our first game. All credit to the players, they had been let down many times in the past and we had to really just make it through the season together. We did make some major progress although our win-loss record did not improve much. Having said that we were competitive in all but two games and we lost seven games by a single goal.
I am excited as we are heading towards our second season together and we have brought in a number of new recruits. Watch this space for regular updates of our progress.
So, how can I help you? Just get in touch with me and I will help you in any way that I can. I can recommend books, dvds etc that may help and I can also send you reports and tips as needed. My aim is to produce a series of dvds showing you how I coach and you can then simply pick up what you like and find useful and disregard the rest.
I don’t claim to be the greatest coach on the planet, but I am confident that I can help you become a better coach in some way, get in touch, I look forward to helping you and your players.
